In Deuteronomy 6:4-8, we are reminded of the sacred duty we have as leaders within our families. The passage begins with a powerful declaration: “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.” This serves as a foundational truth, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing our relationship with God above all else. When we love the Lord with all our heart, soul, and might, we set the stage for true leadership to flourish.
But what does engaged leadership at home entail? Let’s turn to the imagery of the plow for guidance.
Imagine a farmer preparing his field for planting season. With unwavering focus and determination, he guides the plow through the soil, breaking up hardened ground and preparing it to receive the seeds of new life. In much the same way, engaged leadership requires us to diligently tend to the hearts and minds of those entrusted to our care.
Just as the farmer is intimately acquainted with the condition of his soil, we must be attuned to the needs of our family members. We cannot lead effectively from a distance; instead, we must be actively involved in their lives, offering guidance, support, and encouragement every step of the way.
The passage in Deuteronomy instructs us to teach God’s commandments diligently to our children, incorporating them into every aspect of daily life. This requires intentionality and consistency. We must seize every opportunity to impart wisdom and instill values, whether we are sitting at the dinner table, taking a walk together, or tucking them in at night.
Furthermore, just as the farmer’s hands are constantly engaged in the work of the plow, our actions must align with our words. Our children should see the principles we espouse reflected in our daily choices and behaviors. Like frontlets between our eyes, these values should guide our every decision, serving as a beacon of light in a world fraught with darkness.
Finally, we are called to write God’s commandments on the doorposts of our house and on our gates, symbolizing the importance of creating an environment that fosters spiritual growth and reflection. Our homes should be havens of love, peace, and grace, where God’s presence is tangibly felt by all who enter.
As leaders within our homes, we have been entrusted with a sacred responsibility. Let us embrace this calling with humility and courage, knowing that through our faithful stewardship, we have the power to shape generations to come. May we be like the diligent farmer, tirelessly tending to the soil of our family’s hearts, and may our homes be fertile ground for the seeds of God’s kingdom to take root and flourish.
